Step by step guide to silent Film look DaVinci Resolve



  1. Import Your Clip:

    • Open DaVinci Resolve and import the clip you want to transform into a silent film style.
  2. Adjust Frame Rate:

    • Right-click on the clip in the timeline.
    • Go to "Clip Attributes."
    • Change the frame rate to 12 frames per second to mimic the style of old silent films.
  3. Create Jump Cuts:

    • Identify points in the clip where you want to create a jumpy effect.
    • Cut the clip at those points and make slight adjustments to the position of objects or characters between cuts.
  4. Color Grading:

    • Right-click on the clips with cuts and create a new compound clip.
    • Go to the Color page.
    • Desaturate the clip by dragging the saturation to zero.
    • Increase contrast and crush blacks to achieve a high-contrast black and white look.
  5. Add Flicker Effect:

    • Go to the Effects Library.
    • Search for the "Flicker" function (new in DaVinci Resolve 17).
    • Add the flicker effect to the compound clip.
    • Adjust parameters like flicker direction, range, speed, smoothness, and pause length to achieve the desired flickering effect.
  6. Add Film Grain:

    • Optionally, add a film grain effect.
    • Drag and drop a film grain effect onto the compound clip.
    • Customize grain size, texture, and strength to enhance the vintage feel.
  7. Softening the Image:

    • Go back to the Color page.
    • Use the blur option to slightly soften the image.
    • Balance the softness to make it visually appealing.
  8. Adjust Aspect Ratio:

    • Change the aspect ratio to 1.33 for a more authentic silent film look.
    • Alternatively, experiment with cropping options or use provided assets (like overlays) for a different aspect ratio.
  9. Optional: Overlay Assets:

    • If desired, use overlays like rounded PNG files for a specific aspect ratio.
    • Add scratches or other effects for more authenticity.
    • Adjust the composite mode and opacity for a seamless blend.
  10. Add Music:

    • Import and add background music to enhance the silent film experience.
    • Consider using services like Soundstripe or Audiio for royalty-free music.
  11. Export and Share:

    • Once satisfied with the silent movie effect, export the final video.
    • Share and enjoy your vintage-style silent film!
